English or common spinach (Spinacia oleracea) is often confused with silverbeet (Beta vulgaris). English spinach has oval leaves and green stems, both of which are edible. It has a delicate flavour and is best from May to October. It is low in calories and packed with dietary fibre, and is a source of vitamin C, folate and beta-carotene.
